Blind spot

Area around a vehicle that the driver cannot see using the mirrors.

Definition

The blind spot is the area around the vehicle not covered by direct vision or by the mirrors. It is particularly dangerous when changing lanes, overtaking or turning, because another vehicle, a motorcycle or a pedestrian may be in it without the driver seeing them.

Key facts

  • Before changing lanes, turn your head over your shoulder to check the blind spot.
  • Motorcycles and bicycles are especially hard to spot.
  • Trucks have much larger blind spots; never linger beside the cab.
