Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

Electronic device that prevents the wheels from locking up during emergency braking.

Definition

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking under heavy braking. By avoiding lock-up, the driver retains steering control and can swerve to avoid obstacles while braking at full force.

  • Mandatory on every car sold in the EU since 2004.
  • Doesn't always shorten braking distance, but improves directional control.
  • Press the brake pedal hard and hold it; do not pump.
