Definition
The blood alcohol limit measures the concentration of alcohol in the driver's blood (g/L) or exhaled breath (mg/L). Spain's DGT sets different maxima depending on licence age and vehicle type. Exceeding them is a serious or very serious offence — or a crime, depending on the level.
Key facts
- General drivers: 0.5 g/L blood · 0.25 mg/L breath.
- New drivers (under 2 years) and professionals: 0.3 g/L · 0.15 mg/L.
- Over 0.60 mg/L breath or 1.2 g/L blood: criminal offence.
- Alcohol elimination is roughly 0.15 g/L per hour; coffee, showers and exercise do not speed it up.
