Blood alcohol limit

Concentration of alcohol in blood or exhaled air, expressed in grams per litre.

Definition

The blood alcohol limit measures the concentration of alcohol in the driver's blood (g/L) or exhaled breath (mg/L). Spain's DGT sets different maxima depending on licence age and vehicle type. Exceeding them is a serious or very serious offence — or a crime, depending on the level.

Key facts

  • General drivers: 0.5 g/L blood · 0.25 mg/L breath.
  • New drivers (under 2 years) and professionals: 0.3 g/L · 0.15 mg/L.
  • Over 0.60 mg/L breath or 1.2 g/L blood: criminal offence.
  • Alcohol elimination is roughly 0.15 g/L per hour; coffee, showers and exercise do not speed it up.
