Frequently asked questions

How many traffic signs are in the DGT catalogue?
The current Spanish DGT 2026 catalogue includes hundreds of signs grouped in three visual families: warning signs (triangular, red border), regulatory signs (circular — red for prohibition or restriction, blue for compulsory action) and information signs (rectangular, typically blue). On this page you can browse every sign that appears in the theory exam.
Which sign overrides another when they contradict?
The general precedence order is: traffic officers' signs and orders > traffic lights > temporary vertical signs (roadworks, incidents) > permanent vertical signs > horizontal road markings. Memorise the chain officer > light > vertical > horizontal — it is a classic exam question.
How do I identify a warning sign?
Warning signs are triangular, with a red border on a white background, and announce a hazard ahead: a bend, a level crossing, schoolchildren, loose animals, etc. They carry code P-{number} in the official DGT catalogue.
What do the R, P and S codes mean?
P = peligro / warning (triangles), R = reglamentación / regulatory (circles), S = indicación / information (rectangles). These are the official codes used by Spain's General Traffic Regulations, and we use them as the URL slug so you can find any sign by its reference.
