Frequently asked questions
- How many traffic signs are in the DGT catalogue?
- The current Spanish DGT 2026 catalogue includes hundreds of signs grouped in three visual families: warning signs (triangular, red border), regulatory signs (circular — red for prohibition or restriction, blue for compulsory action) and information signs (rectangular, typically blue). On this page you can browse every sign that appears in the theory exam.
- Which sign overrides another when they contradict?
- The general precedence order is: traffic officers' signs and orders > traffic lights > temporary vertical signs (roadworks, incidents) > permanent vertical signs > horizontal road markings. Memorise the chain officer > light > vertical > horizontal — it is a classic exam question.
- How do I identify a warning sign?
- Warning signs are triangular, with a red border on a white background, and announce a hazard ahead: a bend, a level crossing, schoolchildren, loose animals, etc. They carry code P-{number} in the official DGT catalogue.
- What do the R, P and S codes mean?
- P = peligro / warning (triangles), R = reglamentación / regulatory (circles), S = indicación / information (rectangles). These are the official codes used by Spain's General Traffic Regulations, and we use them as the URL slug so you can find any sign by its reference.
