Sign S-970: Apartadero

Apartadero
Official Spanish DGT catalogue image — S-970

What it means

The S-970 sign informs of a lay-by. It indicates a prepared space beside the road to move out of the main traffic stream when necessary or convenient, without meaning that you may stop in any manner or perform dangerous manoeuvres. It usually appears on narrow roads, mountain stretches, tunnels, roads where stopping is difficult, or places where it is useful to facilitate passing, brief rest, or an emergency. When you see it, enter only safely, signalling and slowing progressively. In the test they often distinguish it from a service area or ordinary parking: its main function is to move aside from traffic.
