Everything about the A1 license in Spain
The A1 licence lets you ride motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW of power (with a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW/kg) and motor tricycles up to 15 kW. The minimum age is 16, making it the first motorcycle permit you can earn in Spain. If you already hold a B licence with more than 3 years' seniority, you can ride the same A1 motorcycles without sitting a separate exam.
The A1 theory exam has 30 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, with a maximum of 3 errors to pass. The most-tested topics are: mandatory protective gear (approved helmet, gloves), motorcycle braking and cornering technique, motorcycle-specific priority and manoeuvres, and the regulations covering motorcycles on urban and inter-urban roads. After the theory there is a closed-circuit manoeuvre test and an on-road practical.
The total cost of the A1 licence in Spain usually falls between €500 and €900: €94.05 DGT fee (covers theory and practical), medical/psychotechnical certificate (€35–€60) and driving-school enrolment plus lessons. It is one of the cheapest permits and the theory exam can be prepared free online. If you only want to ride 125 cc bikes, A1 is enough; if you want up to 35 kW you'll need to upgrade to A2.
