Traffic signs test — Permit B (Spain)

10 official questions to revise this topic before the DGT exam.

Traffic signs are the universal language of Spanish roads and the single most common topic in the DGT theory exam — roughly one in four Permit B questions deals with vertical signs (warning, regulatory or indication), horizontal road markings, pavement marks, beaconing or hand signals from traffic officers. Knowing each sign's shape, colour and meaning is not enough: you also need to understand the precedence order when several signs appear together, which sign overrides another in case of contradiction, and how a driver's behaviour must change with the road type. This quick test gathers ten representative signs questions from the official 2026 DGT bank, in the same format as the real exam, with explanations for every answer. If you get one wrong, no problem: when you finish you'll see the correct answer, a clear explanation, and links to related topics that often get confused with signs, like right of way or general traffic rules. It's the fastest way to revise signs between driving-school classes or as a final pass before the official exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many signs questions are in the DGT theory test?

The DGT Permit B exam does not have a fixed number per topic, but signs are the most common group: typically 6 to 9 of the 30 questions deal with vertical, horizontal or beaconing signs.

Which sign overrides another when they contradict?

The general precedence order is: officers' signs and orders > traffic lights > circumstantial vertical signs > permanent vertical signs > road markings. When in doubt during the exam, remember 'officer > light > vertical > horizontal'.

Are road markings also asked in the exam?

Yes. Road markings (solid and broken lines, pavement arrows, yellow markings) come up regularly. They are often combined with right-of-way or lane-change questions.

What's the difference between warning and regulatory signs?

Warning signs are triangular with a red border and white background and announce a hazard ahead. Regulatory signs are circular (red-bordered for prohibition or restriction, blue for mandatory action) and impose a rule of conduct. The exam often mixes both to test that you know each visual family.
