How the DGT theory exam in English works

The B licence theory exam has 30 multiple-choice questions and a 30-minute time limit. You can have at most 3 wrong answers. The question language changes, while the traffic rules remain those of Spain.

Request English when you book, whether you apply independently or through a driving school. Mark English on form Mod.04-ES. Confirm that your application records the language and check availability with your school or Provincial Traffic Office.

What it costs and what you need

DGT fee 2.1 is €94.05 and covers two exam attempts. Choosing English has no extra charge. The medical/psychotechnical check and driving-school services are separate costs. Ask each provider for its prices.

Taking the official DGT exam in English

Request English when you submit the exam application. If you register through a driving school, tell them when you enrol and ask for written confirmation that the request was recorded — some schools default to Spanish unless you say otherwise. If you register directly, without a school, request English through the DGT application route and submit it through the available online or Provincial Traffic Office (Jefatura) channel, following that office's appointment rules.

To sit the exam you need:

  • A valid medical/psychotechnical certificate
  • Regulation photos
  • Proof of payment of the DGT's fee 2.1 (€94.05 — the same amount as the Spanish exam, and it covers two attempts)

Language availability is set by the centre and date. Confirm that an English slot is available before travelling or paying a school to submit the application; this page does not promise a particular centre or appointment date. See the DGT's official exam application guidance.

Spain and the UK: differences that change the answer

Spain drives on the right. At an unsigned roundabout, vehicles already on the circular road have priority under Spain's general rule. In the UK, traffic keeps left and the Highway Code's general rule is to give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless signs or markings say otherwise.

For cars without a trailer, Spain's default maximum is 120 km/h on motorways and autovías and 90 km/h on conventional roads. Urban limits are 20, 30 or 50 km/h depending on the street layout. In the UK, cars generally use 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways and 60 mph on single carriageways; the usual built-up default is 30 mph in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and 20 mph in Wales. Local signs can change these defaults.

Drink-drive limits also belong to the jurisdiction: Spain's general limit is 0.5 g/l blood (0.25 mg/l breath), while the UK publishes 80 mg/100 ml blood in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 50 mg/100 ml in Scotland. In Spain, novice drivers during their first two years and specified vehicle or service categories have lower limits of 0.3 g/l blood and 0.15 mg/l breath; drivers under 18 must have zero alcohol. A legal threshold is not a safe drinking allowance.

Can I change an automatic licence to manual in Spain?

Yes. Passing the practical test in a car without a clutch pedal puts code 78 on your licence, which limits you to automatics. Today you remove it by passing the practical test again in a manual car; you don't retake the theory test. EU Directive 2025/2205 will replace that with a course of at least 7 hours on public roads in a manual car. It applies from 26 November 2029. Which DGT exams can I take in English?

The DGT's application form lists English for the theory tests for A1, A2, B and licence recovery after loss of points (RPV), as well as C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E and DE. It lists Spanish and co-official languages for the specific tests for LCM, LVA, AM, BE, C197 and C1E97. Check the language for your exact theory test when applying.

How many errors are allowed on the DGT theory test?

For the B (car) licence you can have up to 3 wrong answers out of 30 questions. For the AM (moped) licence the limit is 2 errors over 20 questions. One more wrong answer above the limit and you fail.

How much does it cost to get a driving licence in Spain?
