What the DGT theory test is
The theory test is the first of the two exams that lead to a Spanish driving licence. You sit it at a DGT exam centre, on a computer, in a single thirty-minute session: each question offers three options and only one is correct. The content comes from the official syllabus and is spread unevenly — analysis of real exams puts road signs and priority at roughly a third of the questions, while blocks such as insurance, cargo or trailers show up once or twice.
What makes the exam hard is rarely the amount of syllabus — it is the wording. The DGT builds its questions around words that flip the whole answer — "always", "never", "except", "only", "at least" — and a prompt read diagonally is a prompt failed, however well you know the topic. That is why practising with exam-style questions, rather than only reading notes, is what moves the needle: you train how you read the prompt at the same time as the content.

How to organise your practice
The order that works best goes from narrow to wide. First, block tests to close specific gaps: road signs, priority, speed and alcohol and drugs. If you would rather walk the whole syllabus in order, the topic-by-topic test covers it block by block.
Then full simulations. Knowing road signs perfectly does not pass you if you have never trained the jump between blocks with the clock running, and that jump is only trained with the 30 questions mixed together. - What is the DGT test?
- The DGT test is the theory exam the Spanish traffic authority (Dirección General de Tráfico) requires before you can get a driving licence in Spain. - Are these the official DGT questions?
- No. We are an independent practice tool. Our exam-style questions include the correct answer and an explanation. We do not provide the official DGT question bank or guarantee that the questions or their difficulty match your exam.
- How many practice tests should I do before the real exam?
- No number of practice tests guarantees a pass. Use your results to identify topics to revise, check that you understand the explanations, and alternate topic sessions with full simulations. A good practice score does not predict the result of the official exam.
