Everything about the AM license in Spain
The AM licence authorises driving two-wheel mopeds up to 50 cc (4 kW if electric) and a built-in maximum speed of 45 km/h, plus three-wheelers and light quadricycles with the same power limits. It is the first DGT permit accessible in Spain: minimum age 15. To carry a pillion passenger the rider must be 18 and the passenger at least 12, both wearing an approved helmet.
The AM theory exam has 20 multiple-choice questions, 20 minutes total and a maximum of 2 errors to pass — a third wrong answer fails the exam. Topics focus on signage, basic road rules, mandatory moped gear (helmet, mirrors) and the moped-specific rules (roads allowed and forbidden, motorway and dual-carriageway banned, priority at unsignalled junctions). After the theory there is a closed-circuit test and an on-road test with a DGT examiner.
Total cost for the AM in Spain is usually €200–€450: DGT fee €94.05, medical/psychotechnical certificate €35–€60, school enrolment and moped practical lessons (2–3 sessions recommended minimum). Many young riders progress from AM to A1 at age 16 — if you already hold the AM with some experience, the A1 theory exam will feel easier because you share most of the syllabus. Alternative: if you have never taken the AM, you can also opt for the 9-hour course (homologated in some regions) that replaces the exam for riding mopeds with a B licence.
