Traffic rules

Core topic for licence B: general rules of circulation, priority, speed, road position, manoeuvres, essential documentation and the punishable conduct most often asked about in the exam. Study it as practical decisions: who goes first, where you position yourself, when you must give way and how you reduce risk.

Traffic signs

Master the hierarchy between officers, temporary signage, traffic lights, vertical signs and road markings. In the exam you must recognise which order prevails, what conduct each sign requires, and when a temporary indication changes what you would normally expect to see on the road.

Vulnerable road users

Licence B requires you to drive with preventive priority towards pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and road users with less physical protection. A small driver error can have serious consequences, so the exam values anticipation, distance, moderate speed and reading the surroundings.

Road safety

Road safety combines prevention, occupant protection and the correct reaction to an emergency. The theory exam usually mixes active safety, passive safety and the PAS response within the same question, so always study cause, consequence and safe conduct together.

The B licence is the most requested in Spain: it allows driving cars up to 3,500 kg GVW with up to 9 seats, with or without a light trailer up to 750 kg GVW. With the B you can also ride mopeds (AM class) without an additional permit and, after 3 years' seniority, motorcycles up to 125 cc / 11 kW (A1) on Spanish territory. The minimum age is 18.

The theory exam has 30 multiple-choice questions with 3 answer options and a base 30-minute time limit (extended by the video's duration if your exam includes the new video question). You may have up to 3 errors to pass — one more wrong and the exam is failed. The official DGT fee (tasa 2.1) is €94.05 and grants two exam sittings: fail twice, in the same test or across different tests, and a new full fee is due.

The full process for the B licence has four steps: 1) medical/psychotechnical exam at an authorised centre; 2) DGT theory test, which you can prepare online independently or with a driving school; 3) practical road test in a dual-control car, almost always through a driving school; 4) provisional licence issued the same day the practical is passed, with the final card mailed in 2–4 weeks. According to DGT data, the theory pass rate is around 65% and the practical pass rate is about 55%.

The blocks with the most failures in the theory test are vertical and horizontal signage, priority (especially at unsignalled intersections and roundabouts), maximum speed by road type, and the regulations on alcohol, drugs and medical conditions.
