Everything about the LCM license in Spain

The LCM licence (Special Machinery Licence) is required to drive self-propelled construction and services machinery — back-hoes, front-loaders, motor-graders, articulated dumpers and similar — when operating on public roads. The minimum age is 18. It is requested by staff of construction, civil-engineering, mining, municipal-landscaping and technical-services companies.

The LCM theory exam has 20 multiple-choice questions, 20 minutes and a 2-error maximum. The syllabus covers common road rules, signage on worksites and service roads, vehicle clearance and maximum dimensions, machinery-transport rules, identification of the different machinery types (back-hoe, loader, motor-grader) and machinery-specific safety: blind spots, stability on slopes, rollover risk and on-road marshalling procedures.

The total cost of the LCM in Spain is around €300–€600, depending on the centre and how many practical lessons you book with the specific machinery you plan to operate. The DGT fee is the usual €94.05 plus the medical certificate (€35–€60). Once the theory is passed, the practical test is run with the relevant machinery and is usually coordinated with a centre or driving school specialising in heavy equipment.
