Sign R-401A: Mandatory passage

Mandatory passage
Official Spanish DGT catalogue image — R-401A

What it means

The R-401a sign indicates mandatory passage. It requires you to pass on the indicated side or path, normally to go around an obstacle, island, roadworks, or carriageway separation safely. It is not a recommendation or simple guidance: other possible paths are excluded if they contradict the sign. It usually appears at points where the road design requires traffic to be channelled through a specific space. When you see it, adapt your position in advance and follow the indicated passage without entering prohibited areas. In the test they often check that you recognise it as a mandatory sign and identify the correct side.
