Sign R-401C: Mandatory passage

Mandatory passage
Official Spanish DGT catalogue image — R-401C

What it means

The R-401c sign indicates mandatory passage. It requires you to use the passage or side shown by the sign to go around an obstacle, island, roadworks, or carriageway separation, ruling out paths that contradict that order. It is usually placed at points where the road layout needs to organise flow and prevent vehicles from passing on an improper side. When you see it, adjust your position before arriving and follow the imposed route smoothly. In the test they often ask about the mandatory nature of the sign and the difference from simple guidance.
