What it means
The S-53b sign informs of the change from two to three traffic lanes. It announces that the carriageway or direction you are travelling gains a lane, so traffic can be better distributed according to destination, speed, or permitted manoeuvres. It does not by itself authorise sudden changes or improper overtaking. It usually appears before widenings, gradients, overtaking stretches, or accesses where capacity increases. When you see it, keep a predictable path, read markings and signs, and choose lane in advance. In the test they often distinguish it from a lane ending or from a fork.
