What it means
The S-53a sign informs of a change from one to two traffic lanes with specification of the maximum speed in each of them. It indicates that the carriageway widens and that each lane is associated with its own limit, so you must read the whole panel before choosing position. It usually appears at the start of additional lanes, gradients, channelled overtaking, or stretches where speeds are separated. When you see it, move into the appropriate lane in time, respect the signed speed, and avoid sudden changes. In the test they often check that seeing the widening is not enough: each lane has its maximum.
