Sign S-53: Paso of uno a dos carriles of circulacion

Paso of uno a dos carriles of circulacion
Official Spanish DGT catalogue image — S-53

What it means

The S-53 sign indicates the change from one to two traffic lanes. It informs that the carriageway or direction you are travelling on becomes two lanes, so traffic may be distributed according to destination, speed, or permitted manoeuvres. It does not by itself authorise improper overtaking or lane changes without signalling. It usually appears before widenings, accesses, gradients, bypasses, or stretches where road capacity improves. When you see it, observe markings and signs, choose a lane in advance, and keep distance. In the test they often distinguish it from an additional reserved lane or from a fork.
