What it means
The S-840 sign gives advance notice of a mandatory stop. It acts as an advance panel warning that farther ahead there will be a sign or situation requiring you to stop, so you must prepare to reduce speed in time. It does not replace the main stop sign or by itself indicate the exact point where to stop. It is usually placed before intersections, controls, crossings, or places where it is useful to anticipate the stop to avoid harsh braking. When you see it, increase attention and prepare to stop where required. In the test they often ask that it is advance notice, not the final stop order.
