Sign S-34: Apartadero

Apartadero
Official Spanish DGT catalogue image — S-34

What it means

The S-34 sign informs of a lay-by. It indicates a space beside the road prepared for moving out of the main traffic stream when necessary or convenient, without turning it into free parking or a service area. It usually appears on narrow roads, mountain stretches, tunnels, gradients, or places where stopping on the carriageway would be especially inconvenient or dangerous. When you see it, you may use it only safely, signalling the manoeuvre and slowing progressively. In the test they often distinguish it from a car park or a mandatory stop: the lay-by is for moving out of the traffic stream.
