What it means
The S-1 sign indicates a motorway. It informs you that you are entering a high-capacity road with controlled accesses and specific regulation for users, lanes, entries, exits, and U-turns according to the applicable signing. It is not a simple direction toward a motorway: it marks the start of that type of road when placed at the corresponding access. It usually appears at the beginning of the motorway or on entry slip roads from other roads. When you see it, adopt the driving style required on a fast road, with observation, distance, and anticipation. In the test they often distinguish motorway from dual carriageway and conventional road.
