What it means
The P-16a sign warns of a steep downhill gradient. It means the stretch descends sharply and that you must anticipate vehicle control, following distance, and the possible need to moderate speed before the gradient pushes you. It usually appears on mountain roads, accesses to valleys, underpasses, or stretches where the slope may lengthen braking. When you see it, slow in good time, avoid getting too close to the vehicle ahead, and pay attention to the road surface. In the test they often distinguish it from a steep uphill gradient and ask what preventive behaviour it requires.
