What it means
The S-16 sign indicates an emergency braking area. It informs of a space prepared so that a vehicle with serious braking problems can leave the main carriageway and stop with less risk. It is not an ordinary traffic lane, a common lay-by, or a place to stop for rest. It usually appears on steep descents or stretches where loss of braking control may be especially dangerous. When you see it, do not occupy that area unless there is a real emergency and keep its access clear. In the test they often ask its specific purpose and distinguish it from rest areas, lay-bys, or normal exits.
