What it means
The S-520 sign indicates the location of a characteristic point on the road. It serves to locate a distinctive place on the route, as a useful reference for orientation, assistance, maintenance, or identifying the stretch, without by itself imposing a manoeuvre obligation. It is usually placed next to the point it refers to, not necessarily before an exit or junction. When you see it, interpret it as location information and keep your driving adapted to the circumstances if that point requires special attention. In the test they often check that you understand its location function, different from advance direction signing or service panels.
