Reversible lane

Lane whose direction of travel can change according to time of day or traffic demand.

Definition

A reversible lane can be driven in either direction, signalled by overhead lights: red crosses (X) over lanes closed to traffic and green arrows (↓) over lanes open in your direction. It is used to manage heavy commuter inflows and outflows at peak hours.

Key facts

  • Driving under a red cross is forbidden, even if the lane looks empty.
  • Identified by overhead lit signs, not by road markings.
  • Heavy goods vehicles, agricultural vehicles, mopeds and bicycles may not use reversible lanes.
