Dual carriageway

Fast road with separated carriageways per direction and at least two lanes each way, no at-grade intersections.

Definition

A dual carriageway (autovía) is a road with separated carriageways for each direction, at least two lanes per direction, and no at-grade intersections. Unlike the motorway (autopista), it may allow direct access from adjacent properties and is usually toll-free.

  • Default speed limit: 120 km/h for cars and motorcycles.
  • Physically separated carriageways, minimum 2 lanes per direction.
  • No at-grade intersections: access via acceleration/deceleration lanes.
  • Forbidden for mopeds, pedestrians, animals and agricultural vehicles.
