Road marking

Lines, symbols or text painted on the pavement that regulate or inform traffic.

Definition

Road markings are the lines, arrows, symbols and text painted on the carriageway to regulate traffic, warn drivers or instruct manoeuvres. They are horizontal signage and are read together with vertical signs.

Key facts

  • Solid line: do not cross or step on it except in emergency.
  • Broken line: may be crossed to overtake or change lanes when safe.
  • Solid + broken side by side: only cross the one closest to your vehicle.
  • Yellow markings are temporary (roadworks, events) and override white ones.
