Pedestrian crossing

Marked zone of the road for pedestrians to cross, where they have priority over vehicles.

Definition

A pedestrian crossing is a section of road marked with parallel white bands (zebra crossing) reserved for pedestrians. At marked crossings, pedestrians have priority over vehicles. Drivers must slow on approach and, if pedestrians are crossing or about to, stop completely.

  • Parallel white bands in the direction of travel form the zebra crossing.
  • Stopping or parking on or within 5 metres before a pedestrian crossing is forbidden.
  • Overtaking near a pedestrian crossing is forbidden.
  • If a pedestrian is crossing, stop and wait until they finish.
