Tyre pressure

The internal air pressure of tyres, set by the manufacturer, that drives behaviour, fuel use and safety.

Definition

Tyre pressure is one of the most important — and most neglected — safety parameters. Wrong pressure increases consumption, shortens tyre life, lengthens braking distance and raises the blowout risk. The recommended pressure is on the driver's door pillar sticker or the fuel-cap flap.

Key facts

  • Check pressure every 15 days or before a long trip, always with cold tyres.
  • Inflate slightly when heavily loaded or driving at high motorway speeds.
  • Low pressure heats the tyre and can cause a blowout.
  • High pressure reduces contact patch and grip.
