How many times can I retake the Spanish DGT theory exam?

No legal cap, but cost is charged per two-sitting block. Official 2026 figures.

Real cost of multiple sittings

For the B licence, the DGT fee 4.6 is €94.05 in 2026 and covers two consecutive sittings of the theory exam — plus two of the practical when you get there. So a single payment lets you sit the theory up to twice. If you fail both, the third sitting requires paying again. The 6-month clock starts from your first sitting: if you plan to take the second, do it within that window or you lose the paid sitting.

Some driving schools include 'second-chance' attempts or extra sitting packs in the contract; others don't — check before enrolling. Independent candidates manage each new sitting directly through the DGT online portal and pay the fee themselves.

Time between one exam and the next

There is no legal minimum gap between theory sittings. In practice the wait is driven by your provincial traffic office's slot availability: typically 10 to 30 calendar days. High-volume offices (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville) usually have slots every 1-2 weeks; less saturated ones can require a 3-4 week wait. Through a driving school they book the slot for you; independent candidates manage it through miDGT with Cl@ve PIN, electronic DNI or digital certificate.

What if I fail several times in a row?

Legally nothing — you still have the right to sit again. But if you string several fails together, what's failing is usually the study method, not intelligence or luck. Pass rates on the second and third attempts are significantly higher than on the first precisely because after the first try you know the format and where to push. After three or more fails, stop, take a real per-topic diagnostic, and spend time where it's needed — don't blindly repeat full simulations.

Two sister pages cover this in depth: I failed the theory exam (10-14 day recovery plan) and most common mistakes (the topics that concentrate most fails).

Expiry: the theory exam also lapses

Once you pass the theory you have 2 years to also pass the practical road exam. If 2 years lapse without passing it, the theory expires: it loses validity and you must retake it (with the corresponding fee). Most people complete the licence in 3-6 months and never get close to that deadline, but there are cases — moving provinces, pregnancy, relocation, gap month — where it pays to finish the practical phase quickly to avoid losing the theory pass.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a legal limit on how many times I can retake the Spanish DGT theory exam?
No. There is no legal cap on the number of attempts at the Spanish DGT theory exam. You can sit it as many times as you need — but every block of two consecutive sittings requires paying the fee 4.6 (€94.05 in 2026). The regulation only sets a 6-month validity from the date of the first attempt.
What does the DGT fee 4.6 cover?
The fee 4.6 covers two consecutive sittings of the theory exam plus two of the practical exam, and the licence issuance if you pass both. So one €94.05 payment lets you sit the theory up to twice (then the practical up to twice). If you fail both theory sittings, you must pay the fee again for the third sitting. The validity of the two sittings is 6 months from the first attempt.
How long do I have to wait between one exam and the next?
There is no legal minimum gap between attempts. In practice the wait depends on slot availability at your provincial traffic office: typically 10 to 30 days. Independent candidates book directly on the DGT online platform. Through a driving school, the school usually has reserved blocks and assigns the next available date.
What happens if I fail the theory exam several times in a row?
Legally nothing — you still have the right to sit again. What changes is the cost and the method: each new sitting beyond the second requires paying the €94.05 fee again. After several consecutive fails it pays to revise the approach: take a per-topic diagnostic, identify the blocks where you miss most (signs, right of way and speed are the usual suspects) and spend time where it really matters. Our 7-day plan and the common-mistakes guide are designed for that.
Does the theory exam expire if I take too long to sit the practical?
Yes. Once you pass the theory you have 2 years to also pass the practical road exam. If the 2 years lapse without passing the practical, the theory expires and you have to retake it (and pay the fee again). It pays to chain the two exams closely — most people complete the licence in 3 to 6 months.
Do my sittings carry over if I switch driving school or province?
Yes. The right to the two theory sittings covered by your fee is personal and independent of the driving school and province. If you switch schools, the new one can manage your pending sittings; if you move province, you can request the transfer of your file at the new provincial traffic office — you don't lose paid sittings.

Better prepared the first time than paying twice

Passing on the first try saves €94.05, weeks of waiting and the emotional cost of retaking. Our 7-day plan and 30-question simulation are the most direct way to arrive at the exam with margin.
