C1Difficulty 3/5

When parking a vehicle with a trailer on a noticeable uphill gradient and leaving the driving position, a suitable kerb is available but no wheel chocks. In addition to the other immobilisation measures, what should you do?

Correct answer

Rest one of the steering wheels against the kerb, turning those wheels towards the centre of the road.

Rest one steering wheel against the kerb, turning the steering wheels towards the centre of the road. On a downhill gradient they point outwards. This is an additional measure: when leaving the driving position apply the parking brake, stop the engine and select first gear uphill, or the parking position as applicable, along with other required precautions. Proper wheel chocks are an alternative; stones or improvised objects are not a permitted substitute.
