Bad news first: at 14 you cannot yet obtain any official Spanish driving licence. The minimum age is 15 for the AM licence (moped up to 50 cc, 45 km/h). Good news: you can start studying the theory now — the AM exam has 20 multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes with a 2-error maximum, and the topics (signs, right of way, basic rules) are the same ones that will appear in every later licence you might get. Familiarising yourself with road signs now significantly shortens study time once you turn 15 and enrol at a driving school.
Make the wait count
There are still months to go before 15. The most useful thing you can do now is revise road signs — they're the most-tested block in every DGT exam and the most visual topic, so easy to study even in short daily sessions. Our daily sign rotates every morning so you see a new one effortlessly.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a driving school or can I go independent?
- In Spain it is legal to take any DGT licence as an independent candidate. In practice the theory can be prepared free online, but the practical road exam is almost always taken via a driving school because the dual-control lessons are the standard way to prepare it. For AM or A1 some people go independent; for B the vast majority go through a school, even though the practical lessons are the highest variable cost of the budget.
- When is a good time to start studying the theory?
- The theory can be prepared online at any age — the material is public and free. It pays to start at least 4-8 weeks before the target exam date, especially if you've never touched signs or rules. If you're going to obtain several permits progressively, parts of the syllabus overlap across AM → A1 → A2 → B, so each successive exam is somewhat easier than the previous one.
- Are there any exceptions to drive under 15?
- No. On public roads (streets, highways, motorways) the minimum age to drive any motor vehicle in Spain is 15 with an AM permit. Outside public roads (private land, closed circuits) no licence is needed but insurance and owner's consent are. Under 15 some cities also ban electric scooters (VMP) — check the local municipal ordinance.
Other ages in the journey
The Spanish permit catalogue unlocks by age. Here are the other stops on the journey — what you can and cannot drive at each moment.
