Next step at 16A1 licence (125 cc bikes)

Fifteen is the first legal age in Spain to obtain a driving licence: the AM, which authorises riding a moped up to 50 cc and 45 km/h by construction. It also covers light quadricycles and tricycles with the same power limits. It is the most accessible permit — total cost is around €200-450, the theory exam is 20 questions in 20 minutes with 2 errors max, and the practical is a closed-circuit test plus a brief road ride. If you plan to jump to the A1 licence (125 cc motorcycles) when you turn 16, having the AM first gives you on-road experience that translates into confidence on the A1.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a driving school or can I go independent?
In Spain it is legal to take any DGT licence as an independent candidate. In practice the theory can be prepared free online, but the practical road exam is almost always taken via a driving school because the dual-control lessons are the standard way to prepare it. For AM or A1 some people go independent; for B the vast majority go through a school, even though the practical lessons are the highest variable cost of the budget.
When is a good time to start studying the theory?
The theory can be prepared online at any age — the material is public and free. It pays to start at least 4-8 weeks before the target exam date, especially if you've never touched signs or rules. If you're going to obtain several permits progressively, parts of the syllabus overlap across AM → A1 → A2 → B, so each successive exam is somewhat easier than the previous one.
Can I carry a pillion passenger on the moped at 15?
No. To carry a pillion passenger on a moped the rider must be 18 or older, and the pillion at least 12. At 15-17 you can ride solo. Both must wear an approved helmet. This rule aims to reduce accident rates in a statistically exposed age band.
