What has changed when preparing for the DGT theory exam in 2026

The regulatory change to review is the sign catalogue under RD 465/2025, in force since 1 July 2025. It affects the meanings and identification of signs you study for the 2026 theory exam. These examples help you compare your material with the official text.

We are not the DGT. This guide is independent preparation material.

Which signs have changed: examples to review

Source for the examples and effective date: BOE — RD 465/2025, anexo I.

  • P-20a, P-20b and P-20c: distinguish the hazard

The catalogue distinguishes an approaching pedestrian crossing, an area with high pedestrian activity and a shared pedestrian and cycle crossing. Review the full code and meaning: relying on the old generic P-20 reference can cause confusion.

  • R-305 and R-306: different overtaking restrictions

The R-305 definition concerns overtaking that involves the opposing-direction area. R-306 applies to lorries above 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass even without entering that area. Other general overtaking restrictions still apply.

  • R-407a and R-407b: cycles and mopeds

The catalogue distinguishes mandatory or reserved routes for cycles and mopeds. Check the code letter and pictogram; an unqualified R-407 reference does not distinguish the two cases.

What to check about your exam format

Distinguish sign regulations from announcements about how the exam is run. To confirm the conditions of your sitting, including a possible video question, consult the DGT's official preparation and exam information or ask your driving school.

How to prepare for these changes

First compare your manual's signs with the BOE; then practise their meaning in context. Continue with Test DGT 2026 and its practice options, review the sign catalogue and check your understanding with a signs test.

Theory exam changes: frequently asked questions

What changes should I study for the 2026 DGT theory exam?
Review the sign catalogue under RD 465/2025, especially meanings and codes that differ from your manual. This guide gives concrete BOE-sourced examples, not a complete list of changes to the official question bank.
When did the new sign catalogue take effect?
RD 465/2025 was published on 17 June 2025 and took effect on 1 July 2025. It is a 2025 reform to take into account when preparing for the exam in 2026.
Can I still use my older manual?
Use it as study material and compare the signs with the current BOE catalogue. Check the code, pictogram and meaning before memorising an answer.
Will my sitting include a video question?
Confirm your sitting's conditions with the DGT or your driving school. An exam announcement alone does not confirm the precise format of your test.
Where can I practise after reviewing the changes?
The Test DGT 2026 page brings together practice options. Alternate sign revision with topic tests and simulations. Sacatelcarnet is an independent platform: practice does not guarantee a pass.
