Definition
Since 2006, the Spanish driving licence operates on a points system. New drivers start with 8 points (12 if they already held a licence). Each serious or very serious offence deducts points. Losing all points suspends the licence — the driver must take a course and an exam to recover it.
Key facts
- Starting balance: 8 points for new drivers, 12 for experienced (over 3 years with a valid licence).
- Maximum balance: 15 points (12 + bonus after 3 offence-free years).
- Total loss: licence suspension and mandatory course to recover.
- Minor offences don't deduct points, only serious and very serious.
