Vertical signage

Signs mounted on posts or overhead gantries beside or above the road.

Definition

Vertical signage covers all traffic signs mounted on vertical plates beside or above the road: warnings, prohibitions, obligations, indications, supplementary panels and information signs. It overrides horizontal road markings when the two contradict each other.

Key facts

  • If a vertical sign and a road marking disagree, the vertical sign wins.
  • Officers’ directions take precedence. Temporary signs and beaconing precede traffic lights, which in turn precede vertical signs.
  • Warning signs are triangular with a red border; prohibition is a red-bordered circle; obligation is a blue circle.
