Warning triangles (V-12)

Portable triangular signs placed in front of and behind an immobilised vehicle to warn other drivers.

Definition

Warning triangles (V-12) were, until 2026, the mandatory pre-signalling system for an immobilised vehicle. They were placed 50 m in front of and 50 m behind the car on interurban roads. Their use forced the driver to leave the vehicle and walk on the shoulder, one of the most dangerous situations on the road.

Key facts

  • Mandatory on interurban roads until 31 December 2025.
  • Placed 50 m in front and 50 m behind, visible at 100 m.
  • From 2026, replaced by the connected V-16 beacon linked to DGT 3.0.
  • Their main risk was forcing the driver onto the shoulder of high-speed roads.
