Immobilise the vehicle as close as possible to the right edge, switch off the engine, use hazard lights and keep position lights on. Activate the required warning beacon and request help without delay, using the nearest SOS post if available. Under article 97.3, occupants should head to the nearest refuge or exit, using areas excluded from traffic if present and following emergency instructions. They are not told to drive out when the breakdown prevents it. A traffic queue, in contrast, does not require leaving the vehicle.
