From the side closest to the edge of the road
As a general rule, use the side nearest the road edge, and only with the vehicle stopped, under Article 114. It is not always the right side: the vehicle’s position matters. Before opening or getting out, check that this creates no danger or obstruction, including for cyclists. Using the opposite hand can help you look back, but does not replace checking safety.
