C1Difficulty 3/5

At the same engine speed with no other changes, if oil becomes hotter and its viscosity decreases, how can this affect lubrication pressure?

Correct answer

It can decrease.

Pressure can decrease because thinner oil offers less resistance to flow. A low reading alone does not establish that the oil is very hot: it can also relate to level, unsuitable viscosity, leaks, wear or other faults. Compare the reading with manufacturer conditions and specifications and follow instructions for pressure warnings. Absence of a visible fault does not rule out a problem.
