Correct answer
Retain particles and solid impurities from the oil.
Retain particles and solid impurities in the oil to reduce wear of lubricated parts. The pump moves the oil and other components regulate pressure; the filter does not by itself maintain constant pressure and temperature. Its capacity depends on design and particle size, so it does not remove every contaminant or replace manufacturer-specified oil and filter changes.
