On level ground, compare the same vehicle at the same speed with different loads. If available braking force remains the same, when will it need more distance to stop?

Correct answer

With greater total mass under the stated conditions.

With greater total mass including the load, under the stated conditions. At equal braking force, greater mass means lower deceleration and a longer distance from the same speed. This is not a universal mathematical rule for every real system: grip, tyres, load distribution and brake operation also matter. Observe maximum authorised mass and adapt driving to the load; weight is not the only factor. Reaction distance differs from braking distance.

  • Mass never affects deceleration regardless of braking force.

  • With lower total mass while braking force stays the same.
