BDifficulty 2/5

At the same speed and under comparable conditions, what effect can a heavier load have on braking?

Correct answer

It can increase braking distance.

It can increase the distance needed to stop, so adapt speed and separation. Actual distance also depends on brakes, tyres, grip, gradient and load distribution; there is no universal proportion or guarantee based solely on weight. Greater mass requires more force for the same acceleration, not greater acceleration by definition. Do not exceed authorised masses and secure the load.
