What must you do if the ITV result is negative?

Correct answer

Take the vehicle to the garage on a tow truck and undergo a new inspection within no more than 2 months.

When the result of the Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (ITV) is negative due to defects classified as very serious (DMG), the vehicle is considered not to meet the minimum safety requirements to be driven. In this situation, the vehicle owner must take immediate steps to resolve these defects. Transporting the vehicle to the garage by tow truck: since very serious defects mean the vehicle cannot be driven safely on public roads, it is forbidden to drive it to the garage for repair. Instead, a tow truck must be requested to transport it to the relevant garage. Repairing the defects: once the vehicle arrives at the garage, the mechanics must correct the defects identified during the negative inspection. These defects are usually related to critical safety aspects, such as problems with the braking system, steering, tyres, lights, among others. Presenting the vehicle for a new inspection: after the defects have been repaired, the vehicle owner must arrange a new appointment to take the ITV test. This second inspection must take place within no more than two months from the date of the first negative inspection.
