Use engine braking: roll off the hand-operated throttle and select a suitable lower gear for your speed without exceeding the engine’s permitted speed. Combine this with progressive use of the brakes when needed. This reduces the load on the brakes and the risk of overheating; it does not eliminate brake wear. Do not coast downhill in neutral or with the clutch held in.
