C1Difficulty 3/5

Which gas is produced by complete combustion of the carbon in petrol or diesel fuel?

Correct answer

Carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide, CO₂. In complete combustion, carbon reacts with oxygen to form this gas. A real engine can also emit other combustion products and unburned fuel; this does not mean its exhaust contains only CO₂. Carbon dioxide must not be confused with carbon monoxide.
