BDifficulty 2/5

A car of up to 3,500 kg suffers a breakdown on a dual carriageway and can still move safely, but at an abnormally low speed. Where must it leave the road?

Correct answer

Drive to the first exit by which you can leave the road.

At the first available exit, under Article 38(2). If the emergency forces abnormally slow travel that seriously disrupts traffic, Article 36 requires this vehicle to use the right-hand shoulder where usable and sufficient; otherwise, the indispensable part of the carriageway. Use hazard warning lights under Article 49(3) if below the minimum speed and at risk of a rear-end collision. If continuing is unsafe, do not try to reach the exit at any cost: take emergency measures and seek assistance.
