A loose or broken pump drive belt may prevent proper operation and cause overheating. Other possible causes include coolant loss, blockage or thermostat faults. Follow manufacturer instructions for a temperature warning and do not open a hot pressurised cooling circuit. Not every engine uses a belt-driven pump.
