Ice greatly reduces grip and can substantially lengthen braking. Reduce speed before the hazard, increase clearance and use steering and pedals gently. If you hit ice and lose grip, ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt braking or steering. Suitable gear depends on slope and vehicle: first gear is not a universal remedy. No manoeuvre guarantees control on every icy patch.
