C1Difficulty 3/5

If you are driving a 7,000 kg MAM lorry along a carriageway outside a built-up area, with two-way traffic and three lanes for each direction, delimited by broken longitudinal lines, which of these lanes are you permitted to drive in?

Correct answer

Only in the right-hand lane and, exceptionally, the middle lane.

When the carriageway outside a built-up area on which we are driving our lorry of more than 3,500 kg MAM has 3 or more lanes for the same direction, drivers of lorries and vans with an MAM of more than 3,500 kg must normally drive in the lane furthest to the right, and may use the adjacent lane when traffic or road conditions advise it, provided they do not hinder another vehicle following them.
