In a built-up area, you ride a motorcycle and overtake an animal-drawn vehicle on a carriageway with one lane in each direction. What minimum lateral clearance does the current rule require?

Correct answer

At least 1.5 metres, while completing the manoeuvre safely.

At least 1.5 metres, without endangering the overtaken vehicle or oncoming traffic. Article 85.4 requires this margin in built-up areas too, using part or all of the adjacent or opposite lane as applicable. With more than one lane in each direction, a complete lane change is required. If it cannot be done safely, wait. The article’s additional reduction of 20 km/h below the limit applies outside built-up areas.
